1. Choose the Perfect Campsite

Not all campsites are created equal! Before setting up, look for:

• Flat, dry ground: Avoid slopes and areas prone to flooding.
• Wind protection: Use trees, hills, or natural barriers to shield against strong winds.
• Proximity to water: Being near a water source is convenient, but stay at least 200 feet away to protect the environment.
• Safe distance from hazards: Avoid camping under dead trees or near unstable rock formations.
• Sunlight vs. Shade: Balance shade for cooling with sunlight for warmth and solar-powered gear.

We always scope out potential campsites ahead of time and use tools like Campendium to find the best locations that match our needs.

Maddy likes to find one that is a little walk away from the nearest bathroom we have found that people typically choose the sites closest to the bathroom meaning we can increase of chances of not being RIGHT on top of our neighbors!

2. Pitch Your Tent in the Best Spot

Once you’ve chosen your campsite:

• Clear away rocks, sticks, and debris.
• Position your tent on level ground with the door facing downhill (to prevent water from pooling in case of rain).
• Use a ground tarp underneath to protect against moisture.
• Stake down your tent securely to withstand wind.

When we set up camp, we always make sure the pups have a cozy shaded spot nearby. A good campsite setup isn’t just about people—it’s about making sure your entire pack is comfortable! We keep all of our dog go to items with us just in case!

3. Set Up Your Campfire Safely

• Use an existing fire ring if available.
• Keep the fire at least 10 feet away from tents and other flammable items.
• Clear a 3-foot perimeter around the fire area, removing leaves and debris.
• Stack firewood upwind from the fire for easy access.
• Always have water or a fire extinguisher nearby.

One of our favorite parts of camping is gathering around the fire at night, swapping stories, and making s’mores. But safety comes first—always check local fire regulations before lighting up!

We swear by these fire gloves to allow up to move logs and cook safely. We never wanted to be in a situation where we were able to keep ourselves, the dogs, or the planet safe!

4. Organize Your Camp Kitchen

A well-organized camp kitchen makes cooking easier and safer.

• Set up a sturdy camp table for food prep.
• Store food in bear-proof containers or hang it from a tree if necessary.
• Have a dedicated wash station with biodegradable soap and a dish-drying area.
• Keep trash and recycling bags handy and dispose of waste properly.
• Use a camp stove for cooking instead of relying solely on a fire.

5. Create a Comfortable Living Space

our campsite should be as relaxing as it is functional.

• Set up camp chairs and a hammock for lounging.
• Use solar-powered string lights or lanterns for nighttime visibility.
• Lay out a camping rug to keep dirt out of your tent.
• Keep essentials like flashlights, first aid kits, and extra layers easily accessible.

There’s nothing like kicking back in a hammock with our pups after a long hike. Having a cozy and functional setup means more time for adventure and less time worrying about where things are. Jess’s favorite camping accessory is our camping chair couch! She LOVES cuddling on it with the dogs and a blanket by the fire!

6. Nighttime & Security Tips

• Lock up food and scented items to avoid attracting wildlife.
• Store valuables in your locked vehicle or a secure container.
• Keep a headlamp or flashlight within reach for nighttime trips.
• Know your surroundings and have a plan in case of emergency.
