A Love for Worms & a New Adventure
Jess’s favorite animal isn’t something big and majestic—it’s worms! She’s been composting with worms since 2012 and even has a few pet worms living with us. If that sounds unusual, trust us—it’s an adventure! Worm composting is a fascinating way to turn food scraps into rich, organic compost, and Jess has spent years learning alongside these tiny composting powerhouses.
As we transition to full-time RV living, we won’t be bringing Jess’s commercial worm tower just yet—but that doesn’t mean we’re leaving worms behind! Over the next year, Jess plans to figure out how to make space for these little friends on the road. Jess’s pet worms live in this type of set up and we have a mini compost pile for them to explore!
🐛 Want to see our composting worms in action? We recently shared a short 2-minute video of us feeding them over on Instagram! Check it out to see just how easy (and fun) it is!

What Is Worm Composting & Why We Love It
- A simple, sustainable way to break down food waste.
- Reduces landfill waste and creates nutrient-rich compost.
- Jess’s background in worm composting:
- Selling worm castings and worm tea at markets.
- Learning from master gardeners about the benefits of worm compost.
- Donating worms to Growing Together Aquaponics, a PA-based nonprofit that teaches adults with disabilities about aquaponics. Their system doesn’t require worms, but the worms help break down plant and fish waste efficiently.
Why Worm Composting on the Road Is a Challenge—But One We’re Excited to Tackle!
- Traditional composting bins take up space, and moisture control can be tricky in a moving home.
- While many RVers use Bokashi or dehydrator-style composting, Jess is determined to find a way to keep worms in a small, manageable setup.
- She’s experimented with 5-gallon buckets, plastic tubs, terrariums, and commercial worm towers—so the next step is figuring out what works best for RV life!
How We Plan to Make Room for Worm Composting in an RV
- Looking into compact, stackable bins that work in small spaces.
- 🛒 Stackable Worm Composting Bin (like Vermihut or Worm Factory 360!)
- Exploring ways to keep the worms comfortable in different temperatures.
- Testing out what will work best over the next year of RV life!
Common Worm Composting Myths (And Why They Aren’t True!)
- It’s messy and smelly → Not if it’s managed properly! A healthy worm bin has no bad odors.
- It’s complicated → Actually, worms do most of the work. You just need to check in and listen to what the bin is telling you (moisture, food levels, airflow, etc.).
- You need a ton of space → Worm bins can thrive in tiny apartments, RVs, or even 5-gallon buckets!
